About Us

An ‘open’ meeting was held at UK Paper Leisure Club in Sittingbourne on the 1st February 2008 to ascertain whether the people of Swale wanted to set up a Forum for people over 50.

Over 75 people attended the meeting and listened to speakers from other established Forums. Those attending agreed they wished to set up an Older Peoples Forum for Swale. A model constitution was adopted and those wishing to join the Management Committee came forward with their names.

Amongst those present were the MP for Sittingbourne Derek Wyatt; Cllr John Morris Mayor of Swale; representatives from Health and Social Services, KCC and Swale Borough Council.

The open meeting was a culmination of the work of a steering committee led by Swale Council for Voluntary Service and formed in November 2007.

Older Peoples Forums are becoming increasingly popular nationally.

They are run BY older people FOR older people; all members are volunteers. They are independent organisations that provide older people with an opportunity to collectively influence decision makers on matters which may have an impact on their everyday lives. They are democratic, inclusive and non-party political. They decide their own agenda.

The Forum has a register of members that it is working hard to increase.

Sub-committees have been set up and they are looking at Transport Issues; Falls incidents in older people; a Publicity and Recruitment Group and there will soon be a group looking at consultation documents and relevant published papers.

Open Public Forums are held on a regular basis and rotated in the three Swale towns to keep the wider membership and general public informed of the activities of this lively forum.
